AIBO as a Needs-Based Companion Dog

چکیده
In this paper we describe the architecture that allows the modeling of an emotionally intelligent robotic companion dog. We chose to implement this architecture for AIBO, which is a dog-like autonomous robot, developed by Sony. AIBO was developed as an entertainment robot and its ‘mind’ is programmable. The focus of this paper is on creating a complex personality model that provides a realistic needs-oriented behavior for robotic companion dogs. The personality model is an extension of the nPME model and implies that needs play the most important role and influence the behavior of the AIBO robot in every situation. Personality, Mood and Emotions are three layers that, in combination with the needs, make AIBO show a real doglike behavior. The existing personality models need to be modified, adaptated and improved so as to handle the unknown and dynamic environment in which AIBO performs. So, as part of the system design, the importance of incoming events has been considered. A modification in this architecture modeling the function of amygdale has been introduced to speed up the resolution of some situations. The implemented architecture is also designed to be suitable for future extensions in the model. The prototype has been tested in different scenarios using an AIBO robot. An extensive user study has been carried on involving several students and workers to test the realism, emotional responses and event coherency in robot’s behavior.

متن کاملChildren's behavior toward and understanding of robotic and living dogs
Available online 19 November 2008 This study investigated children's reasoning about and behavioral interactions with a computationally sophisticated robotic dog (Sony's AIBO) compared to a live dog (an Australian Shepherd). Seventy-two children from three age groups (7–9 years, 10–12 years, and 13–15 years) participated in this study. Results showed that more children conceptualized the live d...
متن کاملBehavioural comparison of human-animal (dog) and human-robot (AIBO) interactions.
The behavioural analysis of human-robot interactions can help in developing socially interactive robots. The current study analyzes human-robot interaction with Theme software and the corresponding pattern detection algorithm. The method is based on the analysis of the temporal structure of the interactions by detecting T-patterns in the behaviour. We have compared humans' (children and adults)...
متن کاملA Robotic Interface for Retrieval of Distributed Multimedia Content
In a social setting, it is often beneficial to have a partner that is alert of the environment and the circumstances and is able to communicate information that otherwise does not come to our awareness. Typically, these are human companions, however a robotic partner may be an alternate solution. For a robotic partner to be successful, it must naturally interact with its user, and be able to re...
متن کاملAnimal-assisted therapy and loneliness in nursing homes: use of robotic versus living dogs.
Loneliness is a common problem in long-term care facilities (LTCF) and previous work has shown that animal-assisted therapy (AAT) can to some degree reverse loneliness. Here, we compared the ability of a living dog (Dog) and a robotic dog (AIBO) to treat loneliness in elderly patients living in LTCF. In comparison with a control group not receiving AAT, both the Dog and AIBO groups had statisti...
